Privacy by Default is when the default settings of a program, app, website, service or device aim to ensure maximum privacy.
Some examples of situations lacking privacy by default:
- Default sharing on social networks
- Form fields such as “I want to be kept informed” that are ticked by default
- Requesting details such as date of birth and phone number if they are not relevant (for example when subscribing to a newsletter)
- General terms and conditions that stipulate that your data are shared with third parties
- Automatic login and linking to other websites
- Apps that copy your address book during installation and continuously share your location
- Automatically displaying all information about someone on social networks
