What is Privacy by Default?

Privacy by Default is when the default settings of a program, app, website, service or device aim to ensure maximum privacy.

Some examples of situations lacking privacy by default:

  • Default sharing on social networks
  • Form fields such as “I want to be kept informed” that are ticked by default
  • Requesting details such as date of birth and phone number if they are not relevant (for example when subscribing to a newsletter)
  • General terms and conditions that stipulate that your data are shared with third parties
  • Automatic login and linking to other websites
  • Apps that copy your address book during installation and continuously share your location
  • Automatically displaying all information about someone on social networks
