Can I enter copyrighted material into AI tools?

AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Easy Access Agreement
Personal data

This is usually not permitted in public generative AI tools. Publishers and copyright holders impose conditions on the use of their material, and many AI tools do not comply with these conditions. An increasing number of content providers (suppliers of databases, e-books and e-journals) are including an AI clause that prohibits the use of their material in AI systems. Some AI tools claim that imported content is (partly) transferred to the system, which may violate copyright law. The Easy Access Agreement does not permit the uploading of copyright-protected material into generative AI tools.

Students and staff may only enter their own work, Open Access material and legitimate online sources via a link into AI tools. Never enter personal data in prompts, either your own or that of lecturers, fellow students or respondents. In addition, always protect company information: during internships or projects, confidential data, such as financial or strategic information, may not be uploaded to public AI tools without the explicit permission of the organisation. Furthermore, be transparent about your use of generative AI and refer to sources correctly (see APA guidelines).
