What is a preservation copy?

Publicly accessible libraries (and museums) may make a copy of lawfully obtained material to 'protect it from decay'. Artikel 16n of the Dutch Copyright Act specifies the conditions under which such a preservation copy can be made. It may be used if the reproduction is intended to preserve the work and a copy has to be made for that purpose. The copied work must be a permanent part of the collection.
